God for Sinners Devotional Series: Filth in God's Eyes...

The problem with sin is that we have gotten too comfortable with it in our lives… people spend a lot of time talking to others about their sins but nearly not as much time listening to God and confessing to Him THEIR OWN sins. I know I often have to be mindful of this myself – being a teacher it is easy to go out and tell others what they are doing and forget you yourself are also susceptible to sin. I also need to seek God daily and put on the full armor of God to combat temptation before it comes.

These days, many sins have become common place…no one blinks an eye at fornication anymore, it’s almost as if it’s expected – even in the churches. Divorce is a terrible thing but these days’ people throw divorce parties and plan for marriages instead of a marriage. We do things that we know totally go against God and we laugh about them. We groove to music that promotes violence, drugs, sex, abuse of women, abuse of yourself, abuse of others – we watch television that clearly has nothing to do with the principles of God and we feast on these things building up a tolerance for them to the point that we do not recognize them as SINS but …”sins” annoyances…rather than things that truly grieves God.

God revealed to me just how He feels about sin through a series of events…I tend to be a bit of a germ-a-phobe so I am very particular about cleanliness and cleaning up behind other people. I especially have an issue with bathrooms and kitchens and other bodies…I’m the type that will see a skin cell on a bathroom wall because I grew up with a mother who cleaned for a living so she was very anal about the way things were cleaned. Because of this, I love a clean home but I hate to have to clean – and I abhor cleaning behind other people, on three different occasions God brought me to a place where I would have to deal with cleaning and I was disgusted. The first time, I simply declined and kept it moving. The second time I didn’t have a choice but to surround myself with it and it consumed and upset me, I still refused to clean it – because it wasn’t mine. The third time, I had no choice but to get down and clean it because I was the only one who could, and I could either continue to step over it and risk others stepping in it or I could get down and clean it myself.

All the while I was scrubbing I had my nose turned up, frowning, disgusted, sickened…I had gloves, disinfectant, antibacterial…three different towels and I felt that the filth I was cleaning was beneath me and I was upset that I even had to do what I was doing. In the midst of this, I heard gently in my spirit –

“This is how I feel about sin. I look upon the earth and all I see is filth and it does disgust me. I hate sin, I hate it and I hate having to go in and clean such filth – but I do anyway because I am the only one who can and I LOVE ALL OF YOU.”

Sin is so filthy that God sending His son to die on a cross is the equivalent of us coming back to earth in the form of vomit …it is similar to the waste that flushes down our drains. It wasn’t something that was easy for God to do, send part of Himself, His perfect spirit – His beloved Son, Spirit of His Spirit – down to this filthy world and to submerge Him in the midst of flesh, infected with the disease of SIN because we needed His blood to spill in order to cleanse us of our filth. So when we turn away from God and indulge in sin, it is like eating vomit from a toilet after a drinking binge…God turns up His nose, He doesn’t like it, and He will not continue to tolerate it. Selah. 

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”—1 John 1:7-9

“Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.”—Hebrews 12:3-4

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming”.—Colossians 3:5-6

“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”—Galatians 5:19-21
